Drupal 8 Progress Report

Long anticipated and much talked about Drupal 8 making great progress. This week saw the release of Drupal 8 alpha 11 and two major patches - one adding PSR-4 autoloading support and another containing the Drupal 6 to Drupal 8 migration path. The PSR-4 patch added PSR-4 support alongside PSR-0 but it is planned to remove PSR-0 support for module classes before the first beta. We will continue to support PSR-0 for external libraries provided by modules. For more information read the change record.

FedEx Changes Ground Shipping Prices

FedEx is changing the way it charges to ship bulky packages, jolting e-commerce companies with price increases for delivering items as diverse as diapers, shoes and paper towels.

Instead of charging by weight alone, all ground packages will now be priced according to size. In effect, that will mean a price increase on more than a third of its U.S. ground shipments.

The big question now is whether United Parcel Service Inc. UPS is expected to follow the pricing move. Many analysts think it will. The two companies have historically matched price increases rather than seize the chance for a competitive advantage.

Smartphones Serving as Shopping Companions

Smartphone usage while shopping in-store is now the norm.

January 2014 polling by Thrive Analytics and the Local Search Association found that the majority of US smartphone users in each age demographic studied used their phones at least sometimes while shopping in brick-and-mortar stores—and few felt guilty about it.

Unsurprisingly, the highest usage levels were among respondents in the youngest age group, 18- to 29-year-olds, with nearly all saying they took out their smartphones while in-store. Still, even around seven in 10 of those ages 54 and older had done so.

FCC Says It Isn't Nixing Net Neutrality

In an article from Ecommerce Times, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler denies reports that the FCC is abandoning its support of Net neutrality. The reports appeared just prior to the release by the FCC of a notice that it is proposing some new Open Internet rules. The old rules were rejected by a federal court in January and tossed back to the FCC for a rewrite.

There has been "a great deal of misinformation" circulating about the proposed rules, Wheeler said in a blog post.

"The Notice does not change the underlying goals of transparency, no blocking of lawful content, and no unreasonable discrimination among users established by the 2010 Rule. To be very direct, the proposal would establish that behavior harmful to consumers or competition by limiting the openness of the Internet will not be permitted," Wheeler added.

Improving the Drupal Admin Experience - Drupal Meetup

At the last Drupal Meetup, we talked about improving the admin experience for everyday Drupal users. This was inspired by the DrupalCon Portland talk called "Secrets to Awesomizing Your Editor's Back-End Drupal Experience."

Drupal can sometimes have a reputation for being difficult to use. This can be exacerbated if the person complaining has been using Wordpress. It need not be that way. Its true that Drupal is pretty bare-bones when first installed, but with just a little bit of effort, the back end can be made much easier to use for non-technical users. Sometimes the smallest improvement can have the biggest impact on client satisfaction.

Here are some of the tips and modules we went over:

The Future of Digital Marketing

The success of today's marketing organizations is largely driven by their adoption of digital technologies to transform the business.

As a result, the CMO and CIO need to work hand in glove to ensure marketing is enabled with the IT tools and processes to further engage with customers in an increasingly connected world. Whether it is with mobile, cloud or social technologies, marketers must embrace digital if they want to be relevant to today's customers.

But this can only be achieved by working closely with IT to fulfill the goals of the business. As we move towards 2014, the digital transformation of today’s organizations will only accelerate, with several trends driving this forward.

The Calls Have Already Started

I just got my first ripoff call of the year and 2014 hasn't even started yet!

The phone rang and a robot voice told me they were with some kind of Google-related company claiming they had a first page position open for me. All I had to do is press a key and a real person would come on the phone and get me all set up for page 1 of Google!

Friends, it is a ripoff. SEO is much, much more complicated than that and NOBODY can guarantee a page 1 ranking in Google search for any keywords or phrases that have any value to you whatsoever!

Further, Google is Google. They don't have a subsidiary with names like Google Placement, Google Pros or anything else. And Google doesnt call to sell you on anything. That's not the way they do things. Never was, never will be.

If you get a call like this, just hang up.

The high price for not having a mobile website

The Google Analytics blog reports some ominous news for businesses that don't have mobile-friendly websites. These are real numbers, not something that some geek came up with to scare you.

The numbers are clear...not having a mobile-friendly site helps your competitors. A great mobile site experience is becoming increasingly important, and users will keep looking for a mobile-friendly site until they find one that works for them. That means your competitors will benefit if your site falls down on the job (and vice versa).
