Over the past 18 years, we've developed a lot of e-commerce websites for a lot of nice people and companies. We've developed them in virtually every platform you can imagine, from Prestashop to Zen Cart to Magento and Drupal Commerce. Some have been very successful, but others never made it.
The quality of the website is important, as is of course, as is ease of navigation, an inspiring design and whether or not there is a niche market for the product/s. And every time I'm asked about the costs involved in an eCommerce project, I can get rather long winded with my reply! It's almost - but not quite - the same as me saying "if you have to ask the cost, you can't afford it."
But in a way, it's true. The biggest cost of an eCommerce website is marketing related. And if you can't afford to market it, then why build it? Save your money to take the kids to Disney World. That's the inherent problem with most Shopify customers. They put together a nice website (yuck - I hate Shopify) but it just sits there because the owner didn't do the marketing. More to come
